Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a minimally invasive, effective therapy that lets you say good-bye to your razor blade and waxing kits, by removing unwanted hair in such areas as the underarms, face, back, bikini line and elsewhere. It produces satisfying, long-lasting results.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser destroys hair follicles, where hair growth originates, by selectively heating the melanin (dark pigment) contained in them. A hair is most susceptible to the laser when it is in an active growth stage—a period in which the hair shaft contains the greatest amount of melanin. Since many hair follicles won’t be in an active growth cycle when you receive your treatment, you will probably need several treatments to achieve the desired permanent hair reduction.

How many laser hair removal treatments?

You may need to undergo four or five treatments, spaced four to eight weeks apart, to enjoy permanent hair reduction and slowed hair regrowth. After that, expect to undergo occasional maintenance treatments (if necessary), at longer and longer intervals, to keep the area devoid of hair.

What results can I expect from laser hair removal?

For suitable candidates, laser treatment can result in 90-percent hair reduction in the treated areas. However, some people respond better to treatment than others. The ideal candidate is a person with dark hair and fair skin, although it can safely be performed on people with darker skin types.

It does not work for people with lighter blond or white hair, which does not have sufficient melanin to be destroyed by the laser.

Are there any side effects?

There is virtually no down-time, and patients can return to work or school the same day. You may experience temporary swelling or redness and should limit sun exposure for a few weeks before and after treatment.
